Camping

in the rain

March 2, 2019

There's just a week to go until our next trip to South East Asia and I can hardly wait!  Since the first time we travelled to that part of the world together in 2016, we're always talking about when the next trip will be.  However, due to work commitments, buying a house and our travel destinations getting in the way, it's been a few years since we were last making the long journey to the other side of the world.

We're starting our journey from London Heathrow Airport,  where we'll fly to Kuala Lumpur via Dubai with Emirates.  Previously,  we've always flown into KL with a direct flight with Malaysia Airlines,  but I hate the 14 hour flight, so Dubai will be a welcome stop over this time. When we land, we will be heading for the city and we've planned 3 nights in ParkRoyal Kuala Lumpur;...

It's been ages since I've had time to get blogging, as so much has happened in our lives since Christmas.  One of the MAJOR things that's been occurring, is that we've been buying our first house together, packing, moving and unpacking.  It's been totally consuming and although the whole process has been comparatively easy going and straight forward, compared to some of the horror stories I've heard, it has still been mentally and physically draining.

The first mistake I made was being lulled into a false sense of security, thinking that the fact we were literally moving just across the road would make the whole process easier - WRONG! In fact, I would argue that it made things harder.  If we'd been moving to another part of the country, we would have employed a removal company, had th...

We have just got back from another fantastic trip to Budapest. We loved it. This was our 3rd time to the Hungarian capital and it did not disappoint!

Me, my partner and my partents departed from London Luton airport on Saturday and after a quick 2 hour journey on a Wizzair flight, we arrived. In previous years, we’ve travelled to Budapest in December, but this year, the flights were much cheaper in November, so we opted for a bargain. The temperature difference was really noticeable. In December, it’s usually 0 degrees and a hat, scarf, gloves and thick puffer jacket are all required, but a month earlier was much more welcoming. Most days, the temperature was around 10 degrees and although we definitely needed our coats, the efficient heating in literally every venue made it quite comforta...

I haven't written anything for weeks and I'm blaming it all on the flu! After watching the symptoms wipe out my boyfriend, I knew it was just a matter of time...

And then it hit.  At first, it was just a sore throat and a few sneezes, but then the aching, shivers, cough, razor-blade throat and temperature all kicked in.  The first round lasted a few days and then I had to dose up and get on with it, as I had to travel across Europe for 5 days with work.  This was my downfall.  I needed the rest and I simply didn't let my body have time to recover; instead pushing on and over-stretching myself.  As a result, as soon as I got home, I relapsed straight back into the WORST flu EVER!

If you saw the coughing fit that the UK Prime Minister Theresa May had this week - that...

So, it's the last day of our holiday in Turkey and it's a sad day. We've had a fantastic week away and we have fallen in love with Marmaris all over again. Despite being extra organised and attempting to pack smarter and lighter than usual, i'm very aware that there is a lot in my hotel room that I did not need to bring with me. Anyway, there are a few things that I couldn't live without; that I am now calling my "holiday essentials". These include:

Skinny tan

I have only just been introduced to this by my best friend who raves about it. It's a great little tool to have in your holiday bag to banish the "whitest legs around the pool" syndrome that I often suffer with on the first few days in the sun. I use the oil, which goes on effortlessly and the colour develops over 8 hours, before showe...

So, once again I'm packing luggage for our holiday and by now, you'd think I'd have nailed the whole packing thing.  The truth is, it doesn't seem to matter how many times I travel, get on a plane or just travel overnight for work, I'm rubbish at it - well that is until recently.  The key to my packing misery is pretty obvious - PLANNING! I've started using lists a lot more in life generally, but for travel planning, they are really helping.  Rather than the usual packing headache, this time I feel completely in control.  Instead of last minute cramming, I have been getting our stuff together for almost a week and there's been no stress, panic or confusion.  This is the way forward!

The list

I've recently started a bullet journal and I've put it to use for my ho...

This afternoon, after catching up on what felt like weeks of washing, cleaning and tidying up, I jumped in my car and went shopping. With my next trip to Turkey just a couple of weeks away, I went armed with a short, but concise list of items that we need for our holiday.

My first stop was Boots. After feeling guilty about spending so much money on makeup in recent months, it was hard to believe that I'd run out, but I had just used the last of my favourite foundation. Whilst I stood, scanning the endless choices in one of the narrow aisles, a helpful young assistant approached me and didn't just ask "do you need any help?", she took the time to see what I was already looking at and made some suggestions. She led me to the Max Factor counter, where she proceeded to sit me down an...

When I first started working from home, I tried working on the edge of a table, sitting with my laptop on my lap in the living room and even going out and finding a quiet spot in a cafe.  I was never unproductive, but I often felt frustrated and disorganised - not having enough space or all the things I needed around me. Eventually, I started working in our spare room and this helped, but it still wasn’t ideal.  It was a bedroom with a space for me to sit all day, but not much more.  And then, we decided to clear out our other spare room, which had been used as nothing more than a storage room for the past 6 years and convert it into an office - and what a transformation!  I now have a usable space, where I can lay out all my projects.  It’s not in anyone’s way and I can close the door on...

We've now owned Max and Bella our 2 little Cavalier King Charles Spaniels for almost 5 years and I wouldn't be without them, but it has taken us a while to perfect the art of going camping with dogs. We both love the outdoors and camping is one of our favourite past times, but to make camping with the dogs work, there are a few things we have tried and tested along the way.

The first, and most important thing to consider, is the location and campsite that you plan to stay at.  Don't presume that all sites accept dogs - they don't! Even if they do say they accept them, check for any restrictions or rules they have in place, such as breed restrictions (large or dangerous dog breed are often not allowed), dog-friendly zones and whether you have to keep your dog on a lead.  Turning up on site,...

There's been speculation since last year that prices would start to rise, but now it's actually happened.  I usually take at least 1 package holiday every year and often to repeat destinations, so I feel I am well-placed to be a barometer on this matter and I can absolutely state that prices have gone up!  Our regular week away to Turkey at the end of the summer holiday (end of August/beginning of September) has been priced at almost double what we typically pay.  In fact, the price is near enough the same as a week mid-August, which has always been known as the absolute peak.

Brexit is no doubt a factor in the summer holiday price hikes, as there is so much uncertainty regarding what the changes will mean for holiday makers and a spokesperson for Travelzoo in the UK says t...
